Daniel Jon DeWitt was born to Larry and Eleanor (Renard) DeWitt on September 20, 1937. Being an only son, his mother spoiled him rotten until the day she died. He and his younger sisters, Susie and Dina were fond of playing games; with Dan occasionally taking liberty with the rules - a trait he would exhibit all his life.
Dan played football and ran the 100 yard dash at Green Bay West High School. Dan attended UW-Madison where he was a proud member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He met the love of his life, Marilyn Hermsen, in 1956; their romance grew until they married in 1959. After they married, Dan and Marilyn moved back to Green Bay, where Dan started a career in retail foods, and Marilyn started raising their family. They were blessed with 4 children; Mike, Colette(CeCe), Phil and Renee.
In 1962 Dan and his father Larry went into business together and bought Mednikows, a grocery and liquor store in downtown Green Bay. Dan and Marilyn eventually purchased Mednikow’s from his father and ran it for 23 years.
In 1966, Dan and Marilyn bought a piece of property on Kangaroo Lake in Door County. Using a combination of forced family labor and an 80 Year carpenter named Bill, they designed and built “The Cottage”. It will forever be known for many things, including being the last occupied home in Door County without indoor plumbing.
Dan loved swimming with the kids, waterskiing and fishing. He especially enjoyed sailing on Kangaroo and racing his Flying Scott sailboat “No Sweat” on the Bay of Green Bay ; first with his lifelong buddy Ron Williamson and later with his son, Mike, and Bob Clement. Dan was also an “avid” hunter along with Ron and another lifelong buddy, Gary Nelson. “Always headshots”
Dan and Marilyn loved to travel together; sometimes just the two of them, but more often with friends they’d known since childhood. Marilyn preceded Dan to Heaven by only a few weeks. He left us on June 26th to rejoin her in the next life.
Dan is survived by sons, Michael and Phillip DeWitt, daughters Colette (Ron King) Kuhfuss and Renee (Jeff) Bisbee , sisters Susan Davie and Dina Plumb, brother and sister in law Jim and Jackie Resick, nieces Andrea and Emily Resick, nine grandchildren: Ashleigh DeWitt, Alyssa (John) Preloger, Abigail (Seth) Thompson, Michael DeWitt Jr., Angelica (Jordan) Spoliansky, Shannon (Justin) Stewart, Hunter Kuhfuss, Austin Bisbee, Rhiannon Bisbee and three great granddaughters: Sawyer and Sunny Stewart and Eloise Preloger.
A private Memorial Service will be held on September 15th at Malcore Funeral Home.
