James "Jim" L. Hoover

Green Bay

James "Jim" Hoover, 82, Green Bay, found peace early Monday morning, July 8, 2024. Born January 25, 1942, in Richmond, IN, he is the son of the late Everett "E.C." and Doris (Moore) Hoover. The family relocated to Eagle River,WI when he was a young boy, where the family ran their own business. Jim graduated from Eagle River High School where he enjoyed playing hockey, won the state hockey championship and was inducted into the Northern Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame. After graduation, he entered the Army National Guard. He later met and married Elizabeth "Betty" Dreger on May 2, 1964 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Eagle River. Jim started a career in law enforcement as a Sheriff Deputy in Vilas County. The young couple then moved to Green Bay where Jim was employed at the Green Bay Correctional Institution (GBIC), eventually retiring in 1997 as Captain Hoover,Administrative Captain. In his retirement, he enjoyed serving the community as he transported handicapped individuals while driving for Lamers and he also worked maintenance at golf courses. 

Jim was very active in his Catholic faith. He was a long time member of Saints Peter and Paul Parish, serving as usher, altar server, and served in the Knights of Columbus. Jim enjoyed fishing, motorcycles, yard work, family gatherings, Corvettes, Florida vacations, shooting pool, and golfing. He will most fondly be remember as a loving husband, dad, grandpa and great-grandpa. 

Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty; three children, Deena Hoover, Doug (Kelly) Hoover, and Darcy Hoover-Martinez; grandchildren, Aubree and her son, Noah; James (Sara), and their children, Ana, James and Kaylee; and Ryah; one sister, Judy Bennett and her children, Brad and Rona; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and other relatives and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Agnes and Louis Dreger.

Visitation at Malcore (East) Funeral Home, 701 N. Baird Street, Friday, July 12, 2024, from 4-8pm. Knights of Columbus recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 Friday at the funeral home and immediately followed with a parish wake service. Visitation to continue Saturday morning, July 13, 2024, at the funeral home from 10:30am until the time of the funeral. Funeral Mass, 11:30am Saturday, at Saints Peter and Paul Church, with Father Jose Lopez officiating. Burial to follow in Allouez Catholic Cemetery with full military honors. 

Jim's family extends a special thank you to Dr. Charles Acher and the Vascular Team at the UW Health University Hospital and to the many cherished friends and family members for all their outstanding support through out this journey.

Jim will be greatly missed by so many.
