LaVerne Feld, 87, Sturgeon Bay, died in Sturgeon Bay on May 1, 2016 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Born May 5, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, she is the daughter of the late George and Lillian Schroeder. She recalled riding streetcars to downtown Chicago to watch movies with her mother on Saturdays and dancing at the Aragon Ballroom during wartime. Her family spent vacations in Kewaunee County and later bought property in Door County. While living there LaVerne worked for the Door County Advocate as a bookkeeper. In 1948 she married Allen H. Moore in Sturgeon Bay. They raised six children on a dairy farm where LaVerne learned to be a farm wife but stopped short of doing barn chores. She made lifelong friends in that neighborhood. Al was well known for his skills as a bowler and LaVerne joined bowling leagues herself in the 1960s, once serving as league president. She also sold Avon products with Al sometimes making the deliveries as the “Avon man.”
LaVerne went to school to become a nurse’s aide after being a stay at home mother for 20 years. She worked at the Algoma hospital and later at the Dorchester Nursing Home following her divorce from Al.
LaVerne married Robert Kent in 1977. During their marriage she returned to her former career as a bookkeeper, working for Peninsula Transfer. In 1988 LaVerne and Bob began spending their winters in Roswell, New Mexico, where her parents retired. Bob died in Roswell in 1990.
In 1993 LaVerne married Ronald Feld in Sturgeon Bay. She recalled many good memories of trips they took and of times spent with his warm, loving extended family. Sadly, Ron died just three years after they were married.
LaVerne spent over 22 winters as a “snowbird” in Roswell. She enjoyed traveling in the Southwest as well as trips to Europe and Alaska. She loved music and dancing, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. LaVerne was also an excellent cook and a classic movie fan. She also enjoyed flowers of all kinds and always planted flowerbeds at her homes.
She is survived by one son, David (Karyn) Moore, Roseville, CA; four daughters, Lynette (Patrick) Harris, Sherry Malvitz, both of Green Bay, Toni Waara, Allouez, MI, and Kristine Moore, Pollock Pines, CA; grandchildren, Shyloe (Adam Hickman) Sachse, Jordyn (Michelle Flores-Alatorre) Lewis, and Zach Lewis, Florida, Sarah (Jordan) Graf and Crystle (Robert) Bennett, Green Bay, and Marissa Moore and Joshua Flack, California; six great grandchildren; one sister, Karen Schroeder, Green Bay; and her close friends and extended step-family.
